Monster Rehab: Tea + Lemonade = Delicious Energy

This is not your daddy’s Arnold Palmer

First of all, you know you’re drinking something good when it comes with a safety warning: CONSUME RESPONSIBLY – MAX 1 CAN EVERY 4 HOURS WITH LIMIT 3 CANS PER DAY. NOT RECOMMENDED FOR CHILDREN, PREGNANT WOMEN OR PEOPLE SENSITIVE TO CAFFEINE.

Whoa, Shaq, settle down, no need to shout. If you’re a human being you’re either a child, pregnant, or sensitive to caffeine. I, for one am glad about these attributes or else I wouldn’t exist or be able to wake up in the afternoon, respectively.

Rehab the Beast!

I’m not too sure who the ‘Beast’ is in this scenario, but they did call me, “The Beast” in high school for kissing some girl (okay, her name was Jessica Smith) on The Beast at Kings Island, so I’m pretty sure they’re talking to me. If you offended by this, drink before judging. In fact, that should be your motto for a lot of things: drink before judging.

The description at Amazon.com states that Rehab includes lemon juice concentrate, glucose, taurine, citric acid, sodium citrate, black tea extract, panax ginseng root extract (among other ingredients) and that this “killer mix of tea, lemonade, electrolytes, and our bad-@ss Rehab energy blend to fire you up.” For around $32 you get 16 cans, which is about $2 a can – or about 50 cents off per can compared to most gas stations and other retailers. Not a bad deal for such a delicious drink.

Vitamin D Energy Drinks

I was reading about vitamin D foods and wondered if there were any vitamin-d enriched energy drinks. It turns out that Tushar Healthcare makes an energy drink called Glucose-D.

“Get a jump start on your day by filling up with the extra energy of Glucose-D. Enriched with Vitamin D and Calcium for easy assimilation and replenishment of essential nutrients. It’s a ready source of energy to fight tiredness and refresh you instantly.”

Glucose-D is manufactured by Tushar Health Care with tri-calcium phosphate, di-calcium phosphate and vitamin D3. Glucose-D is used as instant energy beverage. Tushar Healthcare is an organization managed by well-educated professionals and responsible management personals.

There is also Sip of Sunshine packets by Suzanne Somers which contains exactly 2000 iu of Vitamin D along with a host of other Essential Vitamins and GliSODin which naturally raises your glutathione levels.

There’s really not that many energy drinks with vitamin D. If you’re wanting more, you should probably just drink fortified milk or orange juice as it is not found naturally in any fruits, which make up a lot of energy drink ingredients.

Literal Energy Drinkers

Someone took “Rip It” Energy Fuel literally and tore through the strap holding it on the shelf at this convenience store. This is a 18 ounce can, but 2oz bottles of Rip It Energy shots are available on Amazon.com. They are sugar-free, contain a mega-dose of vitamin B12, and give you, “quick, sustained energy.” It’s available in orange citrus, blue mixed berry, and strawberry.

Beyond Cricket: Energy Drink Companies Seeking Extreme Sports

Shah Rukh Khan (left), Bollywood Producer and Actor, at XXX Launch

Makers of SJ XXX energy drinks are moving beyond sponsoring cricket and boxing and are now on the hunt for adventure sports like ultimate fighting and extreme skiing to tie up with.

In Mumbai, India, JMJ Group, has learned a lot since the launch of its new energy drink brand, SJ XXX (not to be confused with Triple X), in 30 cities in early 2010. JMJ Group has traditionally a real estate and hospitality firm, but Sachiin Joshi, vice-chairman and inventor of SJ XXX, helped steer the company towards energy drinks and they are  aggressively marketing their new brand.

SJ XXX was associated with Kolkata Knight Riders, the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket team co-owned by producer and actor Shah Rukh Khan, when the quick-format cricket tournament —defined by its power hitting—was being played across India in March and April.

Cloud 9, which has been primarily associated with cricket, is among the brands such as Red Bull, Power Horse, Burn, Romanov Red, and SJ XXX that have flooded the Indian market. SJ XXX has since become the lead sponsor for the Commonwealth Boxing Championship, part of the Commonwealth Games to be played in New Delhi in October. For JMJ Group, adventure sports are next.

“It’s a bit of a challenge,” said the 26-year-old Sachiin Joshi, who is exploring the idea of launching fight nights, modelled around the Ultimate Fighting Championship in the US.  This is partly due to the competition from competing energy drinks: Red Bull, from Red Bull India Pvt. Ltd, intends to launch the Red Bull X-Fighters Jams exhibition tour, a competitive exhibition version of the global Red Bull X-Fighters property.

“It involves stunt bikes,” said Rohan Vyavaharkar, national communications manager at Red Bull India.  But Red Bull is already looking past ultimate fighting: Red Bull Air Racing, its world championship and cliff diving event, will also come to India by 2011-12. Globally, the Red Bull brand is already associated with adventure sports such as Formula 1 and Alpine skiing.  It makes sense that JMJ Group would be following in Red Bull’s footsteps.

SJ XXX Energy DrinksLike Red Bull, JMJ wants to create a market for extreme sports through XXX. “We are keen to set up a winter sport like skiing,” said Joshi, but the market is already flooded with brands such as Cloud 9 from Goldwin Healthcare Pvt. Ltd; Power Horse of Austria’s Spitz KG, locally owned by Power Horse India Pvt. Ltd; Coca- Cola’s Burn, launched late last year; and Romanov Red from the UB Group, launched this year.

Cloud 9 is keen to sponsor the cricket World Cup 2011 and the next season of IPL, said Priyesh Ganatra, chairman and managing director of Goodwin Healthcare. Cloud 9 has been associated primarily with cricket, sponsoring the Chennai Super Kings team during IPL 2009, the India-Australia series in October and the India-South Africa series in February.

“Our investments in cricket have paid off. We got huge mileage because of Sachin Tendulkar’s double century in the India-Australia series,” said Ganatra. “We applauded his success through hoardings later. It was greatly beneficial in brand recall.” Hiren Pandit, managing partner (entertainment sports partnerships) at Group M, said Red Bull’s global success on the back of extreme sports meant it was natural for other firms to copy this strategy.

But Indians traditionally are not too fond of extreme sports, so could this marketing strategy backfire? “Apeing international brands is perhaps not the best way to go,” Pandit said, adding that the challenge for most energy drinks would be to find a niche of their own. Nanda said they could look at opportunities beyond sports. “As the market grows, one would see these brand filtering into other areas such as fashion, lifestyle, etc. The strategy should be to cover as many consumption occasions as possible to build sales,” he said.

Romanov Red from United Spirits Ltd is focused on sports and music-related activities, said business head Debashish Shyam. “Besides owing a team, we’ve also been part of sampling and promotional associations with other teams,” he said. Like anything else, diversification is key, even when marketing energy drinks.

The Energy Drink Revolution

The first beverage to be considered an energy drink, Scottish drink, Irn-Bru (produced as “Iron Brew”), was created in 1901. It was over sixty years before Lipovitan, a genki drink, was created in Japan. Most such products in Japan bear little resemblance to soft drinks, and are sold instead in small brown glass medicine bottles or cans styled to resemble such containers. These “genki drinks”, which are also produced inSouth Korea, are marketed primarily to salarymen.

In UK, Lucozade Energy was originally introduced in 1929 as a hospital drink for “aiding the recovery;” in the early 1980s, it was promoted as an energy drink for “replenishing lost energy.”

The first drink marketed as being designed to improve the performance of athletes and sports stars arrived in the United States in the 1960s. It was invented for thefootball team at the University of Florida, known as the Gators — wwhich is where it gets its name, Gatorade. Designed to aid hydration and lengthen performance levels, it claimed that its ingredients were formulated for just such things. While Gatorade is safer than many energy drinks, water has been proven to be just as hydrating.   People who drink it just prefer it over water because it tastes better with sugar, salt, and other flavors.  The carbohydrates in Gatorade allow the small intestines to absorb water easier, but it is passed through the body just as quickly, therefore the only advantage is that of the sugars and salt intake.

In 1985, Jolt Cola was introduced in the United States. Its marketing strategy centered on the drink’s caffeine content, billing it as a means to promote wakefulness. The initial slogan was, “All the sugar and twice the caffeine.” That sounded perfect to the teenager up at 2AM or the college student looking to pull an all-nighter.

The Energy Drink Revolution

Monster Energy was launched by Hansen Natural in 2002.

In 1995, PepsiCo launched Josta, the first energy drink introduced by a US beverage company that didn’t just sell energy drinks, but Pepsi discontinued Josta in 1999.

In Europe, energy drinks were pioneered by the S. Spitz Company and a product named Power Horse, before the business savvy of Dietrich Mateschitz, an Austrian entrepreneur, ensured his Red Bull product became far better known, and a worldwide best seller. Mateschitz developed Red Bull based on the Thai drink Krating Daeng, itself based on Lipovitan. Red Bull is the dominant brand in the US after its introduction in 1997, with a market share of approximately 47% and is almost solely responsible for launching the energy drink revolution that we are in today.

Energy Drinks Containing Alcohol Need More Research

Rock Star Alcoholic Energy DrinksWith Energy Drinks like Bawls, Cocaine, Hi-Ball, Monster, No Fear, Red Bull, Rock Star, Wired, and Whoop Ass brands, there are at least 9 Brands of malt drinks that contain at least 6% alcohol along with some of the same ingredients that are in Energy Drinks (caffeine, ginseng, guarana, and taurine).

Anheuser-Busch and Miller Brewing produces several “energy beers” — beer containing caffeine. And Red Bull and vodka — mixed up by bartenders who call it a Friday Flattener or a Dirty Pompadour — has been popular for over ten years.

A Brazilian study found college students didn’t feel as drunk as they actually were after drinking vodka and Red Bull. Their perception of their coordination and reaction time didn’t match objective tests. While some teenagers might feel like this is a benefit, the potential for accidents and alcohol poisoning worries Dr. Sandra Braganza, a pediatrician and nutrition expert at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore in New York. As she prepared to write an article about energy drinks for a pediatrics journal, she was surprised how little published research she could find on them. “The truth is, we don’t know what kind of effects these ingredients can have,” Braganza said of taurine, glucuronolactone and guarana. “We have to start doing more studies on this.”

This is probably because energy drinks are relatively new.

Teenagers Most at Risk with Caffeine

Caffeine Dangers to TeenagersMore than 500 new energy drinks launched worldwide in 2006 and according to Simmons Research, 31% of American teenagers say they drink energy drinks with names like Monster, Red Bull and Rockstar. Experts warn that these beverages can cause serious health problems, some energy drinks even contain a warning reading, “Not recommended for children.”-the very market being targeted the most by the biggest energy drink companies.

One of the biggest worries is how some teenagers intake the drinks. Drinking multiple cans of energy drinks in a row to get a buzz, teenagers can lead to young people getting sick from too much caffeine. “Danger only adds to the appeal,” said Bryan Greenberg, a marketing consultant and an assistant professor of marketing at Elizabethtown College. “Young people need to break away from the bonds of adults and what society thinks is right,” he said. “They’ve grown up watching their parents drink Starbucks coffee, and want their own version. Heart palpitations aren’t likely to scare them off.”

Most brands target males ages 13-24. Industry leader Red Bull, the first energy drink on the market, is now the ‘big arena band’ of the bunch “teetering on the edge of becoming too big and too corporate,” Greenberg said. “Monster is more of a hard rocker, maybe with a little punk thrown in, much more hardcore,” he said. “Rockstar is the more mainstream, glam rock band that’s more about partying then playing.” Teenagers are more likely than any other group to be influenced by this market so they need to be the most careful.
